LPT: Just because you're angry about it, doesn't mean you're right about it.

LPT: Write and save drafts when composing a college essay or other scholarly paper

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Being falsely accused of plagiarism by a professor is not only possible, but extremely tedious to deal with. Having rough drafts saved separately can help with the process so that you aren't stuck with the document in question as your only defense. Seeing the process you went through while writing is very important for administrators to see.

LPT: When commissioning designers to do work for you, always keep a vector file of your company logo handy

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

I believe this post may have been made before, but being a motion designer, it is very frustrating when companies send me small JPEG files of their logo and I have to retrace all the points on Illustrator.

If you are looking for graphics designers to do work for you, it would be very helpful to have a press kit somewhere on your website so that anyone is able to see guidelines for your brand:

  • Twitch has a very good brand asset page that tells you the exact colours of its logo and the dimensions used, as well as a link to an Illustrator file of the logo in question.

  • Discord is another good example that also includes spacing considerations

So to re-iterate my point, it is a life-saver and a very useful item for designers if you have a vector (.svg, .eps and .ai iirc) file of your logo at hand or a link to brand assets/press kits for your company.

If she insists on you not wearing condom, DO wear a condom.

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

You're probably not the first dude she's laid with and said that to, and who knows how many of her partners went and said "fuck it" and raw dogged her. If she tells you not to wear a condom, do not be fooled, she might say it feels better, or some other excuse for you to go raw, but do yourself and urethra a favor, don't be silly wrap your Willy.

LPT: As a supervisor, asking hands-on workers "Is there anything I can do for you that would help you do your job better/make your job easier?"

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

I've experienced the benefits of this several times over the past years, but I'll just include one example.

When I was hired as an engineering intern at a pump distributor, I was doing individual package CAD drawings (which is a pump, gearbox if applicable, and motor all assembled and mounted on a steel plate) that would then go to the mechanics to be built. I had worked in the back warehouse years before as a general shophand, so I was somewhat familiar with the process of putting a package together.

Having been close to the mechanics previously when I worked in back, I went back and basically asked them what the biggest pain in the ass is during the build. They agreed on a few top answers, and I asked "is there anywhere I can change these drawings to make doing your job easier?"

The simple answer?

  1. Shifting the motor an inch back from the pump, which would let them slip couplings in instead of having to unbolt and re-bolt the motor to the plate (which required a crane and was not quick).

  2. Backing the motor flush against the edge of the baseplate, so they could use it as a measurement point and a right angle reference without needing to draw lines.

  3. Slotting some of the bolt holes. Because of casting variances in the pump feet, the bolt holes didn't always line up. (They were pretty bad variances, but telling them "get better castings" really isn't realistic.)

My internship ended right before the drawings I was working on were put into assembly (4+ month lead time) but my boss contacted me and let me know that the mechanics said they'd never had a package come together that easily and precisely once the new drawings hit assembly.

I know I wasn't technically their supervisor, but I think their supervisor should have asked this question before.

LPT: If you're trying to talk to someone in a noisy environment, like at a concert, holding down the tragus will allow you to shout over the noise without blowing out their ear

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Pushing the tragus into the ear canal like a makeshift ear plug protects from enough sound to allow you to shout over the background noise without having to scream right into their unprotected ear hole, or stopping someone from blowing out your ears when trying to scream in your ear about some stupid shit that happened at work in the middle of a concert. It works amazingly well.

Please use discretion as to whether your relationship with that person would allow for unsolicited ear touching.

Why Inspirational Quotes are Bullshit

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Having immigrated to the United States from the former Soviet Union in the late 1970s and carrying a healthy dose of cynicism from the old country, I cringe every time I see a motivational quote. I remember Soviet slogans from my childhood such as “Be ready – Always ready” (Young communist’s slogan), “Ahead to the victory of Communism,” and “Goals are the law, completed goals are the duty, overachieving goals are the honor.” These slogans have lost a great deal in translation in addition to understanding how the good old USSR operated. I had firsthand knowledge of the motivational slogan business because my uncle was a director of a company that designed and distributed these printed masterpieces among offices and manufacturing facilities. This did not prevent him from becoming a very successful businessman in the United States. I believe that it did not come from the slogans he designed. It came from within. It came from wanting to become successful and not from waking up in the morning and reading a quote attributed to Steve Jobs or Mike Ditka. He simply got up in the morning and knew that he needed to make a buck to feed his family. As you know, the USSR imploded regardless of how much it tried to motivate its citizens. People just knew better. They read between the party lines and took the government’s inspirational quotes lightly. There were two different sets of words, some designed for meetings and some designed for private conversations in the kitchen with a few bottles of vodka shared among close friends. The former won.

The Internet makes it nearly impossible to stay away from motivational bullshit. You see it on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, and everywhere else. Do you truly believe it? Will this make you more successful? Will you gain more respect and admiration among those who come across a post where you quoted someone else who, undoubtedly, did not become successful from reading other people’s quotes and re-posting them? Most likely, the person being quoted worked hard on his/her vision and, simply, did not have the time or desire to post stuff that is irrelevant to his/her success. How many truly successful people do you know who re-post motivational crap? I do not know too many. Every successful person I know is just way too busy to post slogans and thinks it is a complete waste of time. And they know that time is the most valuable resource.

There was a ton of literature on the subject of motivation, but this is my own summary:

  1. Compensation – self-explanatory.

  2. Satisfaction from a job well done – if you are a true professional, this is super important.

  3. Recognition – well, we are all humans after all.

  4. Excellent support structure – extremely important. A rarity. If you have it, cherish it. If you are in the sales business, do not move anywhere without it. You will regret it when you lose it.

  5. Flexibility – we are not in kindergarten. We do not want to be told what to do and when to do it. Work hard, play hard. There is no grand rehearsal; this life is all you get. Don’t waste it pleasing someone else.

These are the 5 factors that should motivate you. Everything else is just bullshit.

LPT Request: Where to start when you have so much work you don't know where to start?

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

In my case this is for homework and revision but it could apply to other areas I guess

LPT: Lower you electric bill by doing high-electric activities (laundry for example) during your electric company non-peak hours when electric is less expensive.

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Electric companies charge more during busy hours of the day. Find out what your electric company's peak hours are (you can google it) and avoid doing things that use a lot of electricity during those hours, and alternatively, do the activities during non-peak hours.

LPT: When considering getting a pet, google the problems other pet owners have had with that pet. Then you can see if you're truly able to take care of it.

Bonus: you won't get sucked into your phone when you need to check the time

LPT: Don't let fear make decisions for you. You'll do more things you might not and be proud of yourself for doing them.

[LPT] Never set one of your favorite songs as an alarm to wake up.

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

I have set some of my all time favorite songs as alarms thinking they would make me happy when I wake up in the morning, but now I can't even listen to them anymore because of hearing the beginning of the song so much and associating it with waking up for class.

LPT: Carry a few safety pins in your pocket / purse Halloween weekend and be a hero.

When it's time to euthanise your pet stay with him/her until the last breath, you won't regret it

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Hi, sometime I read a LPT here. It said to stay with your pet until the last breath when euthanising. This LPT came to mind today as my dog was lying there suffering from his pains. I thank you so much for the LPT I don't know who it was but thank you from the deepest of my heart. I think that I could bid a good goodbye to my beloved dog, best friend and brother and maybe I would regret not staying by his side until his end. And please please please make as many photos from your pet as you can at any moment, they will be very precious.

[Computers] If a website 'blocks' you because you have an adblocker you can still read the article if you 'Inspect' the page before being locked out.

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Disclaimer: as per the rules I just want to say this is not an illegal activity. Adblockers are legal, therefore this is legal. It's just another way to see content without seeing ads.

I've seen a couple links on the front page in the last couple of days that quickly lock out the reader if they have an adblocker enabled. I'll be using this link from the front page as an example.

After loading the page, if you have an adblocker, you'll quickly see a screen like this

Before that pops up if you right-click on the text, your browser will have a menu option that includes something like 'Inspect'. Clicking on that will bring up the HTML code for the page.

It will be 'open' to the section of code that contains the writing. 99% of the time it will be contained in a bunch of <p> (paragraph) HTML tags. The section will look something like this (I put an arrow showing a <p> tag).

If you click where the arrow is it will open up the tag and show it's content .

Obviously, it isn't quite as nice to look at as the normal article, but if you've ever been really interested in an article and the website insists you turn off your ad blocker to view it this will often enable you to see the content anyway!

Mileage will vary depending on the website, the coding structure, and how quickly they make the popup happen... but it's always worth a shot!

LPT: rub bleach on the inside of your Halloween pumpkin. It will last x10 longer.

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Rubbing just a little bleach along the inside of your Halloween pumpkin will prevent the bacteria from growing and decomposing your pumpkin too soon.
